dw, there is a conflict of interest in medical news. 70% of all TV revenue comes from big pharma. Politicians get a lot from them too, too lazy to look up the %. Big pharma wants to make money off this if not now, then in the future. So, in my opinion a lot of the scary stories come from those who may benefit. TV and radio news has another kicker. National and local ratings are probably having the highest month long ratings in history, "Scare the hell out of them and they will watch more"
