We are currently amidst of a major epidemic caused by a Coronavirus which has been named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization.
A new medical journal published by the Kusuma School of biological sciences, Indian institute of technology in New Delhi, India suggests that the new Coronavirus (COVID-19) acts and infects the human body much like the HIV. They found 4 insertions in the spike glycoprotein (S) in the Coronavirus (COVID-19) which is not found in any other Coronoviruses. These insertions have many similarity to those in the HIV-1 gp120 or HIV-1 Gag pointing at the notion that individuals with 2 copies of CCR5-Delta32 mutation may be immune to the new Coronavirus (COVID-19) due to the way COVID-19 could infect the human body.
Coronaviruses (CoV) are single-stranded RNA viruses. This in particular Coronavirus (COVID-19) is believed to have originated in Wuhan China. The transmission patterns of COVID-19 is similar to patterns of transmis to other Coronaviruses including by bodily contact, through surfaces and or aerosol contact with persons infected with the virus. Current mortality rate that have been reported by China has been about 2% of infected individuals but this rate has not yet been confirmed outside of China.
By retrieving all the available Coronavirus sequences, scientists from Kusuma School of biological sciences and Acharya Narendra Dev College were able to do a multiple sequence alignment of all Coronavirus genomes and out of 55 coronavirus genome they were able to confirm that the closest relative to COVID-19 was found to be SARS CoV. They then compared the spike glycoprotein sequences of COVID-19 to that of the SARS CoV and the sequence alignment they found was that COVID-19 spike glycoprotein contains 4 insertions. After they performed a multiple sequence alignment of the spike glycoprotein amino acid sequences of all available coronaviruses and found that these 4 insertions were not present in other coronaviruses.
In order to understand the origin of COVID-19 and find more information about this virus, they used the COVID-19 local alignment with each insert as query against all virus genomes and considered hits with 100% sequence coverage. Every single one of the four inserts in the spike glycoprotein (S) in the Coronavirus (COVID-19) aligned with short segments of the Human immunodeficiency Virus-1 (HIV-1) proteins. The first 3 inserts (insert 1,2 and 3) aligned to short segments of amino acid residues in HIV-1 gp120. The insert 4 aligned to HIV-1 Gag. Inserts 1 and 2 are 100% identical to the residues mapped to HIV-1 gp120. Insert 3 maps to HIV-1 gp120 with gaps and insert 4 maps to HIV-1 Gag with gaps.
HIV infects the human body by binding to chemokine co-receptor like CXCR4 and/or CCR5. Given that COVID-19 has 4 inserts notably similar to HIV-1 gp120 and HIV-1 Gag, it has gained additional survival and infectivity advantages. These 4 inserts are critical for the viruses to identify and latch on to their host cells and for viral assembly since surface proteins are responsible for host tropism. The similarity of these 4 inserts to HIV-1 gp120 and HIV-1 Gag is an indication that COVID-19 infects the human body very much similar to HIV-1.
In conclusion it is our opinion that individuals with two copies of CCR5-Delta32 mutation could possibly have immunity to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and individuals with one copy of the CCR5-Delta32 mutation could have a maximum chance of recovery at a event of being infected with the COVID-19 but more research is necessary to be certain
