I can mostly talk about Germany, where I was born and am currently living.
Here we have, according to my latest info, reported 49 cases of the people, who got the Corona virus, not a single death so far. But grocery stores are sold out with respect to basic food items like bread, rice, pasta and meats as if somebody had declared war on us.
To the contrary, in the last 20 consecutive years, we had at more than 1000 deaths per year, because of the much more common influenza virus, frequently confused with the "common cold". And even though this influenza virus is many times more deadly than Corona is, at least so far, nobody ever got into a similar panic as they are now, because 49 cases caught the Corona virus and NOT A SINGLE person died so far here in Germany.
Now THAT is what I call a hysteria. Do not get me wrong, I for sure think that we all are supposed to take this serious, but hording food and preparing for "the end of the world as we know it" is going way over board with this.
Just my opinion on this.
