For newer members, Brilacidin was developed by the

Here is a definition of de novo - The term ''de novo'' is often italicized when written to indicate that it is a Latin phrase. An example of its usage is: biochemistry : ''de novo'' synthesis of a complex molecule, which refers to the biochemical pathway where a complex biomolecule is synthesized anew from simple molecules.
One of the original members of the research team at UPA was Dr. William DeGrado, now at the U of Calif. - San Francisco, and head of the DeGrado Lab at that facility where about 20 students study under him. You can see what this lab does per the attached link: https://pharm.ucsf.edu/degrado.
There is a wonderful presentation by him in the IPIX website Newsroom Blog dtd 21 Nov 2017 given at the World Molecular Frontiers Symposium convened in Budapest where he goes into great detail of how Brilacidin was developed and why it is so powerful. He refers to proteins (and Brilacidin is a defensin protein) as the "workhorses of all living creatures". The only problem is that if you are not a chemical molecular scientist you will not understand discussed in the presentation.
As you read the article and view the presentation you will realize that Dr. DeGrado is the cornerstone of this "de novo" drug synthesis field and his input into the design of Brilacidin should give all every degree of confidence needed that it will prove to be as wonderful revolutionary as many of us have been proclaiming over the years.
Some of Dr. D's background: Dr. DeGrado has co-authored over 370 articles (list of publications), holds more than 25 patents, and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, elected in 1999. In 2003, he was presented (pdf) with the Merrifield Award by the American Peptide Society. He received The Protein Society's Stein and Moore Award in 2015 and, most recently, was presented with the 2017 Biopolymers Murray Goodman Memorial Prize.
Not the most riveting subject to many, but if you have a lot tied up in this stock you should know to the nth degree what you own and why large numbers being thrown around for the Brilacidin licensing rights should be in the billions (my personal WAG).
