An effective CEO should not be "going out of his way to please," he should be going out of his way to be effective in both accomplishing the material tasks of his job and also in letting shareholders know what is going on, either himself or through someone who can effectively communicate. I don't want sunshine being blown up my rear if the forecast is not sunny.
I don't have to like the CEO as a person (not saying I don't here), I have to have a CEO who can get the job done and is potentially ruthless in doing so when the task calls for it.
