Re: Natives still blocking VIA rail service from Toronto east - OT and with apologies.

While I empathise with the issues that "Democracy" visits upon its long suffering citizens and victims - the problems themselves are ancient ones and apparantly part of the human condition:

"...visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons to the third and fourth generation..."

The "Sins of the Fathers" - do not magically vanish - they circle around as an ever present doppelganger until they are dealt with and the "devils" appropriately defeated and the emotional wounds are healed.

Canadians are not "second class citizens" in our own country - we are First Class Citizens in the country we invaded and took over. Think about that concept for more than a nano-second.

We have civil and criminal laws - and while those laws are pretty damn good - they are not perfect by any means and they evolve through time to become (hopefully) better laws. We are also incredibly fortunate that while our laws are applied mostly evenly and equitably - they are not applied harshly nor are they applied with a draconian and heavy hand - in spite of the loud protestations by populist movements that they should be when certain very partisan interests of powerful minorities are affected from time to time.

Our modern technologies have allowed Democracy to be played out in ever more novel, frustrating, (to some), and irritating (to many) ways. Our legal and moral underpinnings are not being "undermined" even though they are being "tested and strained" in so many new and imaginative - and nonetheless powerful - ways. We have yet to find the best way through this challenging thicket - and I am sure that we will.

The alternative is living under some form of harsh and brutal autocracy or theocracy - and even if that form of Government has its appeal to those of certain beliefs - it is not what democracy is or should be about. We will get through this - and hopefully we do not abandon the best of our democratic and tolerant instincts in service to our more base and reptilian ones where we place expediency of the few above the needs of the many.

Much as I empathise with your situation - there are alternate ways to get to or from Ottawa, Montreal, Belleville, Kingston and Toronto than by rail. And no - the First Nations blockages are not directed at thwarting your personal desires and planned itineraries - they have far more pressing and political aims in mind. (Rightly or wrongly.)

We can choose the heavy hand of authoritarianism - or we can choose "The Canadian Way" of negotiation, jawboning and steady pressure. But be assured that one way or another these irritants and frustrations will be resolved - but more patience might be in order. As appealing as quick solutions might be - enforcing them in some brutal fashion merely risks creating far more "Sins" to be visited upon many more succeeding generations. ...and that might not be a smart thing in the long run. (Even if it feels good to those who are the "winners" now.)
