Honduran migrants form caravan, head to U.S.

A new caravan of migrants is headed north from Honduras in hopes of reaching the U.S. border. Hundreds of people recently started walking from the city of San Pedro Sula for the weeks-long journey.

Most caravan attempts in 2019 were broken up by law enforcement in Mexico after continued pressure from the U.S. However, migrants gathered at bus terminals and hitched rides to join the group this week after an advertisement circulated on social media and local news.

Some migrants have admitted the journey will be tough, but have decided to leave their families behind and give it try regardless of the risks.

he caravan is headed north through Guatemala and will then attempt to continue into Mexico. Meanwhile, President Trump has threatened sanctions against Central American governments if they don’t step in to stop the caravans.

“We were sending hundreds of millions of dollars to Guatemala and Honduras, we’re not going to send it anymore,” said the president. “We haven’t been sending it for the last year because they weren’t doing anything for us…they were forming caravans and sending them up, and in those caravans you have some very bad actors, you had some people that we would not want in our country.”

Mexico’s foreign minister has reportedly told the Guatemalan government the migrants will not be allowed to enter Mexico. Some migrants have said they will stay and live in Guatemala where there are job opportunities if they cannot reach the U.S.
