Palmer Report
Mitch McConnell is already facing the specter of potentially losing his status as Senate Majority Leader, if the Democrats win a Senate majority in the 2020 election. Now it turns out Mitch McConnell is facing a far more fundamental problem: potentially losing his status as a Senator, period.
Mitch McConnell is up for reelection in 2020, and considering he’s a Republican in the deeply red state of Kentucky, one would ordinarily consider any attempts at unseating him to be a long shot. Even with the Democrats running a strong candidate like Amy McGrath, the odds are still in McConnell’s favor… right?
Tell that to Matt Bevin, the Republican Governor of Kentucky who just lost his reelection bid tonight. Yes, his Democratic challenger Andy Beshear is something of a uniquely popular candidate in the state. And yes, Bevin is exceedingly unpopular in his own right. But Mitch McConnell is also deeply unpopular in Kentucky, so it means he has a problem.
If a Republican like Matt Bevin can lose in Kentucky in 2019, then a Republican like Mitch McConnell can also lose in Kentucky in 2020. It’s just the political climate we’re in right now. The antics of Donald Trump, and for that matter the antics of McConnell himself, have damaged the Republican brand across the nation.
