Companies sometimes change their minds. At the time you called they might not have had "a perfect partner" to work with or perhaps KB had a new idea or two, or perhaps one of his engineers or consultants had a few free hours to put together a design spec.
Regardless, with all of the press about CGM and all of the money going into the product, and the musical chairs being played by the current participants, as of June 2019 there are still only 24,700 users in the U.S., Canada, the EU and Japan.
