AAR Business Sector Update - Thomas Cook Closure /
Post# of 2306
Some may have heard that Thomas Cook - a large UK travel agent / airline founded in 1841 - ceased operations today due to insolvency.
All assets are likely to be sold off cheaply.
Among the airliner fleet, Thomas Cook had 7 x A330-200 - the same model / mark used by Airbus (the manufacturer) for conversion into A330 MRTT.
I do not believe that the single Airtanker A330 Voyager MRTT / RAF reserve aircraft leased to Condor (a German subsidiary of Thomas Cook) is counted in that figure.
In any event, there are going to be 6/7 x A330-200 that Airbus could buy back and possibly convert into A330 MRTT for a US DoD contract quicker than waiting for slots on the new build production production line.
This will not affect $TMPS's ability to get a 2020 contract from the US Navy but it might make it more likely that Airbus would bid to US TRANSCOM sooner and more cheaply with some kind of package deal possibly also subsuming the existing smaller contractors ($TMPS and Omega) as sub-contractors.
I have also put the following out on Twitter regarding possible aircrew recruiting:
"If there are any former Thomas Cook aircrew who are ex-RAF 216 Sqn on the Tristar, feel free to DM me for a lead on possible contracted out military AAR opportunities #ThomasCook #Tristar #216SqnRAF @216Sqn"
