Back in the 1800's land speculators would travel through western towns circulating rumors the railroads were bypassing the area while going through neighboring towns which would prosper, so people got discouraged and sold their land for pennies on the dollar.
Well, we all know the outcome of what happened next. Speculators became fabulously wealthy while the former land owners became poor, destitute and angry they were swindled out of a fortune.
