Caleb Moore Dies After X Games Crash Video -
Professional Snowmobiler Caleb Moore has died after a serious crash at the X Games.
(The video is below the article)
Caleb Moore which was only 25 years old was a freestyle snowmobiler from the state of Texas, died January 31st Thursday from complications caused by a terrible crash at the X Games Aspen 2013.
Moore was attempting a backflip, a trick that is getting popular in the sport and which he had successfully completed multiple times before. He under-rotated the flip, driving the front end of the snowmobile into the landing and sending him flying over the handlebars and into the snow head-first. His quarter-ton snowmobile dangerously flipped over him.
He was able to walk off with assistance and was thought to have suffered a concussion. While hospitalized it was discovered that Moore had bleeding around his heart and a more severe complication involving his brain injury.
Caleb’s brother Colten Moore also crashed on the very same jump, resulting in a separated pelvis.
Extreme sports are no stranger to scary crashes, but this is the first time that a competitor has died from injuries sustained during an X Games competition (freestyle skier Sarah Burke struck her head while training for last year’s Winter X Games and later passed away from a related brain injury).
Action sports athletes can often seem invincible. Colten Moore appeared to have no problem walking off a terrifying crash last year after losing a grab and falling from the sky. He went on to win gold in the event. In 2007, skateboarder Jake Brown had both of his shoes blown off after falling 50 feet straight onto a hardwood floor. He walked off under his own power and threw down the same trick the very next year.
But the truth is that extreme sports earn the title for a reason, and the danger involved is what makes them so appealing to fans. So unlike a sport like football or hockey that can turn to rule changes to improve player safety, extreme sports are only going to become more dangerous as participants push the limits of what humans can do. Those efforts can result in awe-inspiring feats, but as action sports stars continually fly higher, so does the chance for disaster.
