Bril. has been called a "defensin mimetic" by the company. From Wiki (because it's quick):
Defensins are small cysteine-rich cationic proteins found in both vertebrates and invertebrates. They have also been reported in plants. They are, and function as, host defense peptides. They are active against bacteria, fungi and many enveloped and nonenveloped viruses.
My opinion is that they were attempting to make a synthetic defensin (apparently, they did) and are just beginning to realize the full potential of these molecules. So, probably some of both + a little luck (effect on inflammation/healing pathways).
