Gilead , Descovy -emtricitabine plus tenofovir ,
The difference with Truvada is that they changed the dose of tenofovir so sides effects were slightly less common....
They trying to approve now Descowy for PrEP , I believe Truvada will lose patent next year , so now they came with new drug , but not really new ...
Descovy side effects :
- Not approved for patients with Hepatitis B. Severe acute exacerbation of hepatitis B have been reported .
- Immune Reconstitution Syndrome including occurrence of autoimmune disorders has been reported .
- Kidney damage , acute kidney failure.
- Lactic acidosis and severe hepatomegaly with steatosis.Fatal cases have been reported .
- nausea , diarrhea.
- drugs interaction present , consult your physician.
- do not cover drug resistant HIV , and resistance may happen during this treatment..
Personally I don't like Truvada and Descovy , Some patients taking Truvada as PrEP developed already HIV , and may develope drug resistant HIV.
The Merck drug MK-8591 , is still early but sound better for now...
It is nucleocide reverse transcriptase translocation inhibitor - NRTTI
Probably it will be once a week dose ,
IMO to soon to know much more . They expecting on the market about 2026 , so probably it will be 2027 or 2028
" much will be learned in the future regarding its efficacy and safety in both HIV therapy and prevention "
All IMO as always...
