DEKRA has found through traffic observations and a FORSA survey, how often drivers are distracted by the use of the smartphone while driving. An awareness campaign appeals to the reason of drivers ...
The DEKRA has partnered with Auto Bild launched an awareness campaign at the International Motor Show (IAA). With the slogan "mobile away - your life counts!" Stickers were distributed, which can glue motorists to their rear window. Reason are the again rising numbers of traffic fatalities in Germany. A traffic observation by DEKRA and a FORSA survey give frightening insights into the negligent behavior of motorists.
Hands on the steering wheel - eyes on the traffic
In May 2017, several DEKRA accident research teams traveled to Germany in almost all federal states to observe car drivers with regard to distraction. In the total of more than 15,000 observed drivers , smartphone usage was by far the most common cause of distraction with around 7 percent . In urban areas (7.1 percent) and in urban areas (6.7 percent), the mobile device was used even more frequently than on highways (5.8 percent). The unbelievable conclusion is that on average 7 percent of all car drivers are distracted from driving at any given moment by their smartphone.
Deaths in traffic rise again
"Unfortunately, too many drivers still do not realize how dangerous it is to use their smartphone while driving at the wheel," says DEKRA board member Clemens Klinke . In the US, the topic car accident by distraction has long been an issue. The US Department of Transportation (NHTSA) is already calling for a vehicle mode to limit the usability of smartphones as soon as the vehicle starts to move. New studies and estimates from the US and Germany now show that about one in ten deaths was caused by distraction . In Germany alone, there are a staggering 320 deaths, Thus, there are more people than in alcohol accidents lose their lives (2016: 225 killed).
Unaufmerksamkeits-flying blind
In psychology, the phenomenon is called "Inattentional Blindness" or inattention-blindness : Your own attention is fixed on the smartphone so that environmental stimuli and indications of possible dangers are completely hidden. Pictorially describes Klinke that there is no difference between three seconds while driving to close the eyes or three seconds to look at the phone. In a corresponding 3-second blind flight with 50 km / h you lay 42 meters back. At 5 seconds it is already 70 meters.
Despite ball on the road no reaction of the driver
A demonstration by DEKRA on a traffic training ground showed that drivers who were distracted by their smartphones seldom heard the ball rolling across the street in front of their vehicle. As balls mostly follow children, it became clear how much distraction can endanger other lives. For the experiment, the subjects wore an eyetracking glasses , which tracked the eye movements by camera and could show where the attention was.
Even one third of those over 60 use the smartphone
One might think that especially younger drivers of smartphone use expire on the steering wheel. The DEKRA Forsa survey seems to confirm this with 85 percent of all 18-29 year olds. But even in the age group of 30 - 44 is the readiness for use in 77 percent. Even among the over-60s, 34 percent use more than a third of the smartphone while driving. The speed of reaction , which sinks anyway in the age , becomes only more corrupted thereby. The most common trigger for picking up the phone is incoming SMS or WhatsApp messages (34 percent). Closely followed by drivers who receive calls without hands-free equipment (25 percent). One in five even types messages themselves (20 percent) and about one in six (16 percent) calls others without hands-free calling.
Traffic safety in a downward trend
Unfortunately, the use of the handy devices brings a downward trend in traffic safety . Seatbelt and seat belting, airbags, systems such as ABS and ESP, as well as better-planned roads and more efficient rescue services have all contributed to more safety on the roads. The fatalities have been steadily declining in recent decades. But this trend is tilted. Therefore, DEKRA clearly appeals to all motorists: "Hands on the steering wheel - eyes on the traffic." As with alcohol, Klinke relies on social change. Alcohol at the wheel changed from the trivial offense towards a socially unacceptable behavior. The smartphone use should experience such a social rejection.
More traffic controls and higher fine?
Eighty-five percent of respondents were already in favor of more controls . In contrast, just 4 percent have already been controlled by the police. Furthermore, 56 percent find a fine of 60 euros and a point in Flensburg just too little. Other road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, are also in great danger when using the smartphone on the road.
Enlightenment as a first step to more awareness
Already at the 55th German Traffic Day the topic "cause of accidents on the smartphone" was discussed by experts. Now, DEKRA and Auto Bild started a new campaign at the IAA "Mobile phone - your life counts!" . In addition to distributed stickers at the auto show, the Auto Bild Group also wants to better educate its weekly total of 3 million Auto Bild and 7 million online readers about the dangers of smartphone use in the future. Of course, it remains to hope for the reason of all road users.

Penalties are certainly a possibility.
The far better solution, however, is the following:
He programs his cell phone at home and while he is driving, he can not use this. Callers will then receive the message that the call is on.
As soon as the vehicle does not drive or stop at more than 5 km / h, the mobile phone is automatically unlocked and the mobile phone can be used.
This is the latest technology and currently the best thing on the market. Here the link:

This technique is absolutely capable of saving human lives.
Insurance companies in the US already offer this technology and offer up to 25% off the insurance premiums.
Many car dealerships in the US offer the app when buying a car.
I hope that many will read this article and help save lives, including one's own.
