See the master DD here for an explanation of the difference between the "flying boom" and "probe and drogue" methods and the problem the US DoD has:

With $TMPS now having the more capable "probe and drogue" fleet for the USN / USMC, Omega appears to be preparing to go in a slightly different direction.
Given the fact that Omega will have realized their one KDC-10 and 2 x small B707 (half capacity of a Tristar) are no match for $TMPS's 3 (probably now 4) x Tristar - in terms of transferable fuel capacity, time on station, number of receiver aircraft that can be serviced per sortie - and hence Omega's higher maintenance costs due to more take-off & landings & hence fatigue cycles to earn the same amount of $ on task - they are now considering upgrading their fleet with more higher capacity aircraft and even perhaps some new ones.
As there are a few retired "flying boom" tankers around - including some that are similar to their sole KDC-10 - they are looking to expand and perhaps bid for some USAF work. They will of course be ex-USAF KC-10s available first once Boeing gets its quality assurance back up to an acceptable level for the USAF to accept new KC-46s from them - albeit at a pretty slow rate.

Regarding profit margins, whilst I have no idea what they are, Omega is now considering purchasing both retired aircraft and new off-the-shelf aircraft - so they must be good. The best tanker in the world at present is the A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) which can be ordered with options to do both "flying boom" and "probe and drogue" missions - at over $200M each.
If the USAF decides to reconsider its options - or is forced to by a "business minded value for money" President from 2020 [as happened in driving down the cost of the replacement Presidential aircraft and helicopter fleets and the entire F-35 program] - we can expect one of the "big boys" in the manufacturing industry to get involved and perhaps team up with existing small operators like $TMPS and Omega to use their assets until new aircraft can be built.
It is going to be a very exciting time ahead for those who study these matters in general and for $TMPS shareholders.
