I'd be surprised if DECN is NOT working to compete

For what its worth, I would be. It is not their area of expertise and they do not have the funds to acquire that expertise which would require at least three research chemists, two advanced development engineers and someone schooled in PMAs.
DECN's best bet is to ignore the noise generated on message boards and proceed doing what they appear to do best, creating much better mouse-traps using their advanced technology and get to market first.
It is probably lost on people that DECN inherited a decent idea but a mess from the corrupt Shasta Technologies, and has turned the company into a development company through being nimble, timely, and tough as nails. They have mixed their ability to create finished products with the ability to improve on existing legacy products. They drive legacy manufacturers crazy which is a good thing, but their penny trader shareholder base hurts the company by attacking the company at every opportunity over stock price. This is not lost on potential partners and the large companies DECN needs to curry favor with.
All in all, if DECN had some really $$ they could become a real force. But sadly they are stuck in a stock price is everything and the only thing mode of operation which will most likely lead to some sort of licensing agreements and/or M&A transaction, which in and of themselves will lead to DECN leaving a lot of money on the table, and continued animosity from outsiders.
