Richard Jewell was a 34-year-old security guard at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia who discovered a backpack bomb and risked his own life to clear the area.
The bomb detonated, injuring dozens and killing one. However, if it weren’t for Jewell’s brave actions, surely many more would have died.
The press originally hailed him as the hero that he undoubtedly is.
But the praise didn’t last long. Because he was a white, overweight, southerner, and so the hero was turned quickly to a villian when a criminal profile of the potential bomber caused the media to push one of the most spectacularly fake stories.
They reported that the FBI was looking at Jewell as a possible suspect, without any evidence.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution went on a rampage against this perfectly innocent man who had just saved countless lives in their city at an international event with the eyes of the world on them.
They compared Jewell to a serial killer that had been behind a series of child murders in Atlanta.
The rest of the media happily followed suit, without asking questions or doing their due diligence. They smelled a story and ran with it, never bothering to check if it was a real story.
They portrayed this poor, perfectly innocent man as a pathetic mama’s boy, a fat guy who had failed to become a real police officer and planted the bomb to make himself a hero.

This man was taunted and mocked from coast-to-coast while the FBI made his life hell, and the media never even considered expressing any skepticism at the Clinton-era FBI agents running with absolutely nothing.
When Jewell was at long last exonerated, he successfully sued NBC News, the New York Post, and CNN. His suit against the Atlanta Journal-Constitution was thrown out. He was represented by Lin Wood, an attorney who is representing the kids from Covington Catholic who were given the same treatment by the media earlier this year.
This case is an early example of what would become of our sickening fake news complex that has made a mockery of the First Amendment.
Since then, we have seen such similar fake media feeding frenzies as Rathergate, the way George Zimmerman was treated, to the baseless accusations leveled against Brett Kavanaugh, to the Covington kids.
And of course, the mother of all fake news hoaxes: the Russian Collusion Hoax.
In 2005, a man named Eric Rudolph pled guilty to the bombing.
But the damage was done, Jewell’s life was ruined. Many good people tried to help him, and he even managed to secure himself in law enforcement, but he never could escape the scar the media’s ruthless lies left on his life.
He sadly passed away in 2007 at the age of 44.
Eastwood’s project would be based on a 1997 Vanity Fair article, “American Nightmare: The Ballad of Richard Jewell,” which of Jewell’s “brief moment as a national hero, his hounding by the Feds and the press, and his eccentric friendship with the unknown southern lawyer who helped him through his public torment.”
There is talk of Jonah Hill playing Jewell and Leo DiCaprio playing Lin Wood, but there is no final word on this as yet although the two actors are listed as producers on IMDB. Screenwriter Billy Ray is reportedly writing the script.
Eastwood will be the perfect director for this project. He can be relied upon to tell the truth behind this story and understand the deep relevance of this story to contemporary events.
