Lots of possibles...
But my #1 choice would be Protestant/Eastern Orthodox vs Roman Catholic.
Vatican had to settle otherwise manpower wise Stalin would have marched right into Vatican City. Ending The Roman Catholic Church as we know it. Or should I say the POPE at the time had to settle.
