Virginia Beach, Virginia, April 04, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Lincoln Military Housing (LMH) is preparing to honor the children of service members, throughout April, during the Month of the Military Child.
Established in 1986 by Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, the month recognizes the nearly 2 million U.S. military children who have one or both parents serving in the armed forces.
“Our military children face many challenges that are unique to their situation, such as having a parent deployed for an extended period of time and frequent PCS moves,” said Scarbrough. “Deployments and family separations can be stressful times for children. So participating in community events and programs offered at Lincoln Military Housing can offer relief and support to our families. Our Community Services Mission is to offer programming that improves the quality of life and strengthens personal connections between families and neighbors. We partner with like-minded local organizations to support this goal.”
In support of this effort, Lincoln Military Housing staff will be wearing purple on Friday, April 12 th to show their support. Throughout the month residents are encouraged to stop in their District Office and pick up an appreciation certificate that they can present to their military child and participate in the programs and events offered for free within their community.
“This year, we’re inviting everyone to join us and ‘Purple Up,’ which is an annual campaign created four years ago by Operation Military Kids,” said Scarbrough. “During the month of April, they encourage community awareness and support of military and civilian children.”
“Wearing purple and participating in our community events is a visible way to show support and thank our military children for their strength and sacrifices. The color purple was chosen to represent military children because it is a combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine scarlet(red), and Navy blue.”
