Mexico warns ‘mother of all caravans’ headed toward US
March 29, 2019

Central American migrants, part of the caravan hoping to reach the US border, walk on a road in Tapachula, Chiapas state.

Mexico warned this week that “the mother of all migrant caravans” could be heading toward the US.

Interior Secretary Olga Sanchez Cordero fears that up to 20,000 migrants from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala are already gathering in Honduras.

“We have information that a new caravan is forming in Honduras, that they’re calling ‘the mother of all caravans,’ and they are thinking it could have more than 20,000 people,” she insisted Wednesday.

It comes as another caravan of about 2,500 Central Americans and Cubans is making its way through Mexico’s southern state of Chiapas.

Sanchez-Cordero has pledged a line of “containment” formed by federal police and immigration agents to stop any caravan continuing to the US.

However, Honduras’ deputy foreign minister, Nelly Jerez, insisted that “there is no indication of such a caravan” forming in his country.

The warning came before President Trump accused Mexico in a tweet on Thursday of “doing NOTHING” to help the problem, warning: “May close the Southern Border!”

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador insisted Thursday that his country is doing its part.

“We are going to do everything we can to help. We don’t in any way want a confrontation with the US government,” he said. “It is legitimate that they are displeased and they voice these concerns.”
