He is correct in theory. THC-A will not get you high until heated to produce THC. There is some naturally occuring decarboxylation that can take place and explains your reaction to eating a bud, but most of it was wasted if you didn't heat it first. The buds go through a process of decarboxylation before being made into edibles including tablets,capsules ect..
