The Yellowstone volcano has erupted three times in history – 2.1 million years ago, 1.2 million years ago and 640,000 years ago. Scientists have previously revealed that, should an earthquake occur, it could take less than two weeks before a catastrophic reaction is triggered. However, it is not just the nearby states of Wyoming, Idaho and Montana that could be effected, it was revealed during a documentary.
This hot mixture of volcanic materials could cause injury or even death to a large part of the population, while also making it impossible to grow any vegetation from the spoiled soil.
However, it was also revealed these effects would not be short-term.
Michael Rampino, a geologist from New York University, detailed how the ash would fill the sky for weeks after the event, causing long-standing problems.
He said: “It acts like a veil and cuts out the sunlight, cooling the climate below.
“I think there would certainly be climatic changes from Yellowstone.
“We estimate three to five degree changes in temperature – which is quite severe on a global basis.”
Dr Rampino previously offered a “biblical” warning over the potential event.
He said: “You cannot grow anything in volcanic ash, as we saw with Mount St Helens.
