President Donald Trump on Friday said a deal with China on currency has been reached and that he may meet his counterpart in Florida next month to try to wrap up talks.
With Vice Premier Liu He back in the Oval Office, Trump said he expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping “soon” to work out the finer points of a deal. “Probably in Mar-a-Lago, probably fairly soon,” he said of the upcoming meeting.
“I would say it’s probably more likely that a deal will happen,” he said. Liu added via a translator, “We believe it is very likely that it will happen.”
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the Chinese delegation were extending their trip by two days and reached an agreement to stabilize their currency (CNYUSD) .
“That means something,” Trump added on the Chinese delegation staying in Washington.
U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said progress has been made on the issue of technology transfers. “It’s one of the structural issues, it has to be done properly,” he said. “We’ve made a lot of progress on it.”
The issue of Huawei and ZTE — the two Chinese telecom firms whose technology is largely banned from use by the U.S. government — “is right now not something we’re discussing.” Trump said any action would be done with the attorney general.
Trump commented on a number of topics:
• On Amazon (AMZN) losing HQ2. “It’s a big loss for New York City,” he said. “The kind of thinking our country is going to on the radical left.”
• On a judge finding that Labor Secretary Alex Acosta broke the law — as a U.S. attorney — when he concealed a plea agreement from those who had been sexually abused by Jeffrey Epstein. “That seems like a long time ago,” Trump said. “He’s been a fantastic labor secretary.”
• On his friend and NFL owner Robert Kraft being charged for soliciting prostitution. “Very sad, I was very surprised to see it. He’s proclaimed his innocence, totally.”
• On Syria, Trump said he wasn’t reversing policy on withdrawing troops. “We can leave a small force, along with others in the force,” he said. He said troops leaving Syria may be redeployed to Iraq.
• On North Carolina election fraud: “I condemn any voter fraud of any kind,” he said, putting greater emphasis on allegations in California and Texas he found troublesome. North Carolina’s election board ordered a new election in the last undecided congressional race.
• On the Coast Guard officer charged with terrorism, with a hit list of prominent Democrats and media members: “It’s a shame, it’s a very sad thing,” he said.
