Rockville, MD, Feb. 05, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Charity Navigator, the nation’s premier charity rating agency, praises Fisher House Foundation with another thumbs up after the non-profit received its 4-star rating for the 15th straight year.
The coveted rating places Fisher House Foundation among the top non-profits in the nation. “There have been few things I have been associated with that bring me more pride and satisfaction than Fisher House Foundation,” said Ken Fisher, Chairman and CEO of Fisher House Foundation. “When a family member tells me that being near her husband saved his life and she could never have done that without a Fisher House, I am touched beyond words. I know I speak for everyone at the Foundation when I say we work hard to ensure we are good stewards of the resources entrusted to us by a generous public.”
Michael Thatcher, President and CEO of Charity Navigator writes in an open letter, “We are proud to announce Fisher House Foundation has earned our fifteenth consecutive 4-star rating. This is our highest possible rating and indicates that your organization adheres to best practices and executes its mission in a financially efficient way. Attaining a 4-star rating verifies that Fisher House Foundation exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in your area of work.”
Less than one percent of the charities rated by Charity Navigator have received at least 15 consecutive 4-star evaluations.
Just as important as the ratings, however, are the military and veterans’ families the Foundation touches, thanks to the support of a generous American public. “The thought of going through this devastating time without the stay at the Fisher House is unbearable,” said Mary Moore, wife of an Army veteran. “I am 99 percent calmer because I could stay at Fisher House, and that is the greatest gift I could give my husband at this time in our lives.”
Thanks to the support Fisher House Foundation receives, we recently opened our 80 th home. These “comfort homes” are built on the grounds of military and VA medical centers. Upon completion, the homes are donated to VA or DoD who manage them in perpetuity, allowing the Foundation to continue building more Fisher Houses.
About Fisher House
Fisher House Foundation is best known for a network of 80 comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. These homes are located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide, and in Europe, close to the medical center or hospital it serves. Fisher Houses have up to 21 suites, with private bedrooms and baths. Families share a common kitchen, laundry facilities, a warm dining room and an inviting living room. Fisher House Foundation ensures that there is never a lodging fee. Since inception, the program has saved military and veterans’ families an estimated $407 million in out of pocket costs for lodging and transportation.
Fisher House Foundation also operates the Hero Miles Program, using donated frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedside of injured service members as well as the Hotels for Heroes program using donated hotel points to allow family members to stay at hotels near medical centers without charge. The Foundation also manages a grant program that supports other military charities and scholarship funds for military children, spouses and children of fallen and disabled veterans. www.fisherhouse.org
