A jury’s decision to award Sen. Rand Paul $580,000 after his neighbor attacked him sends the message that violence will not be tolerated in the U.S., the Kentucky Republican said Thursday.
“To us, the court case wasn't really just about us, it was also about all of us in the sense that it's to send a signal that violence isn't the way we should resolve our differences,” Paul told Fox News.
Paul’s neighbor, Rene Boucher, pleaded guilty in March 2018 to assaulting the senator while he was mowing his lawn. Paul had multiple rib fractures and underwent multiple treatments for pneumonia as a result of the injuries.
Boucher denied the assault was politically motivated. Instead, he said the dispute was sparked by piles of brush on Paul’s property.
“You get on the internet and the hatred is so awful out there. Political differences, religious differences, and even day-to-day differences with the people who live around us. We’ve got to resolve these things peacefully. That’s a mark of America and our civilization, is not resolving things violently. The message from the jury, at least, was we’re just not going tolerate violence in our community,” Paul said.
