Vietnam Vet Who Died Alone
Gets Support from Community: '
Someone Had to Be There for Him'
< >

A Vietnam War veteran who died alone in his New Jersey home was mourned by more than 1,000 people who attended his funeral on Friday.

LeRoy Wooster, the funeral home director who provided the services free of charge, took to social media to invite people to pay their respects.

Wooster said Sunday on Fox & Friends that he first ran a newspaper advertisement to search for relatives of the veteran, Peter Turnpu.

"We made phone calls; we made every possible attempt to find any relatives," he said. "After running the ad, we had no contact."

Turnpu, 77, was found inside his home by a neighbor on Dec. 9, according to the Cherry Hill Courier-Post.

Turnpu reportedly served in Vietnam from 1964 to 1966 before being honorably discharged from the Army.

Wooster said that he had no idea the support for the veteran would be as large as it was.

"It was just one big family, a military family came together of both Vietnam veterans and also active-duty personnel," he said. "I just didn't feel right taking him to the cemetery by himself. ... I felt that someone had to be there for him."
