CES 2019: Active Roku accounts surge 40% to more than 27MN in Q4 2018

As it announced a series of new products and deals at CES 2019, online video platform provider Roku has disclosed preliminary Q4 2018 data for two key operating metrics, active accounts and streaming hours.
roku large 6 OctThe company revealed that by the end of the fourth quarter of 2018, active accounts topped 27 million, up roughly 40% year-over-year while streaming hours were an estimated 7.3 billion hours, up about 68% year-over-year. This brought full-year 2018 streaming hours to about 24 billion, up about 61% from 2017.
Roku said the figures demonstrated continued momentum for the Roku platform as consumers shift toward streaming and away from traditional linear TV.
“Strong active account growth and accelerating streaming hours point to consumers’ growing enthusiasm for streaming, making Roku America’s largest and fastest growing TV streaming distribution platform,” said CEO Anthony Wood. “In 2018, we maintained our leadership in streaming players, licensed smart TVs and TV streaming hours. Roku continues to bring viewers more choice, great value, a compelling user experience – and lots of TV fun.”
At CES Roku revealed Westinghouse Electronics as the latest TV brand to join its TV licensing programme with the set maker using Roku TV hardware reference design and Roku OS to deliver HD Westinghouse Roku TV models, expected in the first half of 2019, and 4K Westinghouse Roku TV models hitting shelves later in the year.
Roku also announced that it was working with US TV brand TCL to make 8KTVs expected to be available to consumers in late 2019 and expanding its 4K and HDR hardware reference design to include far-field microphones for voice search and control.
