(Dec. 31, 2018) — An 18-year-old illegal from Jamaica and three juveniles have been charged in the December 18 murder of a 12-year-old Bridgeport, CT boy shot to death as he stood on his front porch that evening.
Last Monday, Bridgeport Mayor Joseph P. Ganim gave a press conference to announce the arrests of four individuals for the killing of Clinton Howell, whose funeral has yet to be held.
Tajay Chambers and the three juveniles, the youngest of whom is 12 years old, were allegedly in a stolen vehicle from which Chambers fired the shot that killed Howell, who had just returned from buying snacks at a nearby convenience store with his cousin.
According to NBC Connecticut, quoting police, the cousin, now considered “Witness 1,” is a member of a gang and had “fired a pellet gun” at the vehicle in which Chambers and the three juveniles were riding. The car then turned around and shots were fired, ultimately killing Howell.
The cousin reportedly told police that a “social media beef” between the 16-year-old driver of the stolen car and himself was the catalyst for his shooting of the pellet gun which initiated the tragic incident.
The 16-year-old is being prosecuted as an adult, multiple reports said.
An ICE detainer has reportedly been placed on Chambers, who was arrested and jailed on “unrelated” charges the night after Howell died. A $1 million bond has been set for Chambers and the 16-year-old. Chambers appeared in court Thursday and has reportedly confessed to firing the gun which killed Howell.
According to Fox61, once learning that Chambers is an illegal alien, Howell’s brother commented that “Making sure you know citizens are here and basically you know not extending visas or illegal immigrants because stuff like this happens and they take American citizens lives.”
None of the sources referenced for this article termed Chambers an “illegal alien.” The AP reported him as “a citizen of Jamaica,” while WTNH said he is “without legal status.”
NBC Connecticut wrote that “…the judge said Chambers is not a United States’ citizen and that ICE has placed a hold on him. He is from Jamaica and has lived with family in Bridgeport for less than two years.”
