Two arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle nine undocumented immigrants into U.S.
SALTON CITY, Calif.- - A U.S. citizen and lawfully admitted permanent resident were arrested Thursday for allegedly attempting to smuggle nine undocumented immigrants across the border in a semi-trailer.
At 8:45 p.m., El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents conducted an inspection on a 2007 white Freightliner truck that was passing through the Highway 86 Checkpoint in Salton City. While the agents were questioning the driver, a male lawfully admitted permanent resident. and the passenger, a female U.S. citizen, a canine unit alerted them to the trailer of the vehicle.
The truck was waved along for secondary inspection, where it was discovered that nine undocumented immigrants were in the cargo area of the vehicle. The passengers in the trailer had no means of being secured, and the trailer was locked from the outside.
The driver and passenger of the cab, as well as the nine undocumented immigrants, were arrested. The passenger and driver are facing charges of alien smuggling.
“This is an example of the blatant disregard for human life and safety to those being smuggled by these smuggling organizations,” said Chief Patrol Agent Gloria I. Chavez. “This could have turned into a very bad situation if the vehicle would have gotten in an accident or left unattended for a long period of time.”
