Schumer: Democrats Will NEVER Vote to Secure the Border!

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), the Senate Minority Leader, drew a line in the sand on Saturday, proclaiming to the president and all of his supporters that the Democrats on Capitol Hill would NEVER pay to properly secure America’s borders, so Trump may as well just give up on any idea that they will. In one of the most stark unmaskings of the modern Democratic Party that we’ve seen in some time, Schumer stood on the Senate floor and told all who would listen that the left in this country has absolutely no interest in preventing illegal immigration. We sure hope America is listening.

“It will never pass the Senate,” Schumer said of the $5 billion President Trump wants for the wall. “Not today, not next week, not next year. So President Trump, if you want to open the government, you must abandon the wall – plain and simple.”

The White House was busy negotiating with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle on Saturday as Vice President Mike Pence and incoming Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney appeared on Capitol Hill to meet with Schumer. In a statement to reporters, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that “productive discussions are continuing.”

“When those negotiations produce a solution that is acceptable to all parties — which means 60 votes in the Senate, a majority in the House, and a presidential signature — at that point, we will take it up here on the Senate floor,” he said.

However, a spokesman for Schumer said that the vice president made an offer that the Democrats could very easily refuse.

“Unfortunately,” they said, “we’re still very far apart.”

As for Schumer, he was still trying to get Americans to believe that Democrats believe in securing the border. He’s saying this, of course, at the same time that he’s digging his heels in against a major component of border security. Are people really buying this act?

“I’ve heard the president and his allies in the media say that Democrats don’t support border security. Nothing could be further from the truth. Democrats have always been for smart and effective ways to secure our border,” he said. “We are pushing for technology, like drones and sensors, and inspection equipment.”

In other words, we want to keep doing the same kind of namby-pamby crap that has failed to solve the problem for years. If you really want to secure the border, then why not fund the wall. You KNOW that it will work. You have seen how effective it is in the places where we already have strong fencing. You have seen how effective it is in countries like Israel. So why not fund it?

Democrats want to place all the blame for this shutdown on Trump (and Trump, for his part, seems glad to accept it), but that’s a charade. The truth is that the only reason they’re standing against this request is because they know it would be wildly popular with the president’s base. They don’t care about anything else but the optics at this point. People like that do not deserve to have power.
