Mexican police have detained two men and a woman in the killing of two teenage boys from Honduras who traveled to Tijuana as part of a migrant caravan.
The two migrants, ages 16 and 17, were found dead on Saturday in an alley in the Quintana Roo neighborhood in the center of Tijuana, Mexican authorities said in a statement.
The bodies had stab wounds and strangulation injuries, Mexican authorities said.
The two teens had left a special shelter for minors on Saturday and were headed for the Benito Juarez sports complex near the center of Tijuana when they were intercepted by young women who intended to rob them, Mexican authorities said.
The sports complex had previously housed thousands of migrants who poured into the city in early November before flooding from storms forced authorities to move migrants to an indoor shelter on the outskirts of the city.
The women invited the migrants to a house after hearing they had money, according to Zeta Tijuana, a news outlet. Once at the house, one of the women made a call on her cellphone and two men arrived, who after discovering the migrants had no money beat and stabbed the migrants to death, the news outlet reported, citing information from prosecutors.
A third young migrant teen managed to escape, Mexican authorities said.
The three people detained by Mexican police were arrested on suspicion of homicide, illegal deprivation of liberty and other charges, the authorities said.
Migrants seeking asylum wait in Tijuana
Several thousand migrants from Honduras and Central America who traveled in caravans through Mexico have been camped out in shelters in Tijuana since early November awaiting the chance to present themselves to U.S. officials at the legal port of entry to ask for asylum in the U.S.
Immigrant advocates have accused the Trump administration of deliberately allowing only small numbers of migrants to present themselves at the Tijuana border crossing, putting migrants in danger as they wait.
THERE IS NO PLACE TO PUT THESE ILLEGAL INVADERS IN SAN DIEGO. PLUS ALL THEY DO IS BITCH ABOUT THE FOOD, BEDS, AND HOW DIRTY THE FACILITIES ARE. BUT THE MIGRANTS TURNED THE SPORTS COMPLEX INTO A GARBAGE PIT!
Tijuana has been plagued by a spike in homicides in recent years, fueled in part by cartels fighting over control of the drug trade.
More than 2,000 homicides had occurred in the city of nearly 2 million people, exceeding the 1,647 in all of 2017, NBC 7 and Telemundo 20 reported in October.
