People resign when their services are no longer required, or they want to do something else, or they want to retire.
Dr. Menon is not a young man. His services are not needed to develop drugs any more, now that Brilacidin is well on its way. It was gracious of him to retire so that the company no longer had to pay a salary he wasn't earning any more.
