I think that is the way it works and others more verse in patents can chime in.
The logic behind this is if you filed a patent and it was visible the next day, people could grab your ideas, tweak or build upon them and steal your innovations to out do you shortly after.
Like you, I did do the patent search, but on the very same day nFusz PR's it. I read a lot just to see what is out there.
Patents on the desktop are hard these days as it's been around for along time even though technology has been evolving, so much of it is open source. There are a lot of patents filed on mobile as it's still relatively new and an app is different than a browser spinning up a web pages.
I'd love to read the nFusz patent application. Maybe in a year. If it's granted it could be worth billions depending on what it is. Remember what Amazon's patent is worth and it seems like such a simple thing to develop. It's the idea often and not the difficulty.
