“It could happen in a matter of months,” says Martin Mlynczak of NASA’s Langley Research Center.

29 Sep 2018 -“The sun is entering one of the deepest Solar Minima of the Space Age,” writes Dr Tony Phillips, editor of spaceweather.com. Sunspots have been absent for most of 2018, and Earth’s upper atmosphere is responding.
Data from NASA’s TIMED satellite show that the thermosphere (the uppermost layer of air around our planet) is cooling and shrinking, literally decreasing the radius of the atmosphere.
There are other studies lately on the effect of the weak Sun causing lowering of the thermosphere resulting in Jet Stream meandering. This would cause extreme weather, Very cold weather when the jet stream dives into the US for example.
“Right now, it is very low indeed … 10 times smaller than we see during more active phases of the solar cycle,” says Mlynczak
“If current trends continue, it could soon set a Space Age record for cold,” says Mlynczak. “We’re not there quite yet, but it could happen in a matter of months.”

That’s the warning from a NASA scientist who said sunspot activity on the surface of our star has dropped so low that it could herald the arrival of a grim mini Ice Age.
“We see a cooling trend,” Martin Mlynczak of NASA’s Langley Research Center told Space Weather.
“High above Earth’s surface, near the edge of space, our atmosphere is losing heat energy.
“If current trends continue, it could soon set a Space Age record for cold.”
Sunspot activity follows a cycle which is believed to last 11 years as the number of patches peaks and drops.
There have been very few spots on the sun for most of this year, meaning that it could be about to get very cold, very quickly.
“It could happen in a matter of months,” Mlynczak added.
