The UK’s influential Digital Television Group (DTG) quotes a study conducted by pollster YouGov and focus groups that the research company carried out in November 2017 with owners of 4K/UHD televisions.
While participants praised the excellent quality and “crystal clear” images of 4K, but grumbled over the amount of 4K/UHD programming available to them, according to YouGov’s Melanie Nicholls, its head of qualitative research.
YouGov’s study says that 18 per cent of the UK viewing public now own a 4K set. “But these participants believe that the lack of 4K content out there is stunting its growth. One complaint pointed to the fact that they aren’t able to view terrestrial channels in 4K, such as BBC and ITV,” says the YouGov study.
YouGov says that according to its Focus Group participants, there’s a rosy future for 4K. Consumers predict that it will soon be mainstream, and there is a belief that it is indeed the future of home entertainment.
“I think that even with the dawn of 8K on the horizon, 4K will rapidly grow now the prices are dropping sharply and there is more choice. TV stations will produce more 4K content and it will remain very popular for a good few years, 8K will be too expensive for a long while,” said one member of the Group
