Jared Kushner, US president Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior advisor, released an 11-page statement on Monday (July 24) about his contacts with Russians during the 2016 presidential campaign and transition period, as well as an explanation of the errors on his initial SF-86 security clearance form.
The statement was released ahead of Kushner’s closed-door testimony before the Senate Intelligence committee, which is investigating Russia’s attempts to influence the 2016 vote.
Kushner is one of Trump’s closest advisers and the first Trump family member to appear before a congressional committee as a part of the ongoing Russia probe. Kushner, Donlad Trump Jr., and then-campaign chief Paul Manafort attended a June 2016 meeting in Trump Tower with a Russian attorney who had ties to the Kremlin (a meeting he previously did not disclose on his security clearance application). In the statement, Kushner confirmed contact with four Russian officials, but denied having any knowledge of or participating in collusion with Russia.
“I did not collude, nor know of anyone else in the campaign who colluded, with any foreign government,” his statement reads. “I had no improper contacts. I have not relied on Russian funds to finance my business activities in the private sector. I have tried to be fully transparent with regard to the filing of my SF-86 form, above and beyond what is required. Hopefully, this puts these matters to rest.” (Not exactly. As Quartz’s Heather Timmons writes, Kushner’s attempt to clear up the growing number of questions raises several more.)
