Three Members of WV Supreme Court Impeached in One day Then Comes Number Four
In what has to be a first in this country’s history, a complete set of state Supreme Court justices were up for impeachment. One resigned, and the other four decided to take their chances with the legislature.
Three of them found out that didn’t work today, and tomorrow the fourth one is due for an impeachment vote. The outcome is almost certain. How embarrassing is it to have your entire five-member Supreme Court accused, and almost all convicted for corruption? That’s not something you should expect from the state’s highest court.
Justice Robin Davis, Justice Allen Loughry, and Chief Justice Margaret Workman were all impeached today. Justice Menis Ketchum has retired and agreed to plead guilty to wire fraud. Justice Beth Walker will be up tomorrow, which is an important date, because it is the latest that Supreme Court elections can be added to the November voting. That saves the state money needed for a special election.
The Senate will now take up the decision on whether they should be removed from office. Loughry is a lock to be removed.

West Virginia lawmakers have impeached a second state Supreme Court justice accused in a spending scandal.
The House of Delegates voted Monday to send an impeachment article against Justice Robin Davis to the state Senate for trial after earlier impeaching indicted Justice Allen Loughry. The charges against both were related to office renovations. Davis spent more than $500,000 on her office and Loughry spent more than $363,000 on his.
Republican Delegate Tom Fast of Fayette County says he’s seen the work done in Davis’ office, including track lighting on the floor.
He says the work was “over the top” and the impeachment article “is one of the more easy ones” for him to support.
This will have a huge effect in West Virginia, as the justices were Democrats, and will almost certainly be at the least the majority Republican.
