Simple, we're a more diverse population with more

Since they're PUBLIC schools, funded by taxpayer dollars from the same diverse population, the same restrictions apply as to school sanctioned prayers, ANY religion's prayers.
Why do you need to depend on public schools for prayer, religious songs and messages? Not confident in the ability of your church or family to provide same?
There are parochial and private schools where the like minded can receive reinforcement of their beliefs.
There are sound reasons why the government is constricted from preferring any one religion over any other. Freedom of religion is also freedom FROM religion. No free society can reasonably be called so without that guarantee of freedom of thought.

The Third Circuit opinion admitted the changing court view of Christmas: "Certainly, those of us who were educated in public schools remember holiday celebrations replete with Christmas carols and possibly Chanukah songs, to which no objections had been raised. Since then, the governing principles have been examined and defined with more particularity."
