I can speculate
Trump is 5 moves ahead of Democrats. However Trumps needs a AG that can protect him against frivolous legal actions from the left. Sessions could not.
It also should clear the way for a softer approach to the MMJ/HEMP industry in the US that Sessions was robustly against.
It also allows Session to prepare for a run against Doug Jones (D) in Alabama increasing the Republican Majority in the Senate.
It would also appear that Mr. Magoo as AG gave Democrats enough rope to hang themselves. Which will become a political asset to the Trump administration. There are those FBI papers...etc.
New AG also opens a whole new spectrum of legal action and a different direction in prosecuting Obama and Clinton operatives.
Being a little bird in the meeting with Mr. Rosenstein would have been interesting. That man is between a rock and a hard spot.
Session simply becomes a better asset to Trump now on the outside...regardless of differences or perceived differences.
