Domestic violence
Between 960,000 and 3,000,000 incidents of domestic violence are reported each year, while many other incidents go unreported.[19] It is estimated that more than ten million people experience domestic violence in the U.S. each year.[20]
The ten states with the highest rate of females murdered by males were, as of 2010, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee, Louisiana, Virginia, Texas, New Mexico, Hawaii, Arizona, Georgia.[21] In 2009, for homicides in which the victim to offender relationship could be identified, 93% of female victims were murdered by a male they knew, 63% of them in the context of an intimate relationship.[22]
Huh, more Red State stats that belie any claims to moral superiority, much less 'peaceful' behavior. What a surprise.
Several studies in the U.S. have found that domestic violence is significantly more common in the families of police officers than in other families, which is very problematic, since police officers must play a key role in responding to incidents of DV.[23][24][25]
Murder[edit]
Comparative rates of homicides involving family members between 1980 and 2008. Killing by a spouse or ex-spouse exceeds the rate of all other categories. In proportion to the total number of family homicides, killing by spouses and ex-spouses fell from 52% to 37% during this period.[56]
Women are more likely than men to be murdered by an intimate partner. Of those killed by an intimate partner, about three quarters are female and about a quarter are male. In 1999 in the United States, 1,218 women and 424 men were killed by an intimate partner,[57] and 1,181 females and 329 males were killed by their intimate partners in 2005.[58][59]
In 2007, 2,340 deaths were caused by intimate partner violence—making up 14% of all homicides. 70% of these deaths were females and 30% were males.[60]
