Flanked by musicians, Trump signs music copyright bill into law

Joined by Kid Rock, original Beach Boys member Mike Love, and other stars, President Trump signed the Music Modernization Act on Thursday to close loopholes in existing copyright legislation.
Given the rise in music listening through streaming services like Apple AAPL, Music and Spotify, artists have pushed for tighter legislation that allows them to get compensated adequately for their music .
“This is a landmark bill — they’ve been looking for it for many, many years — to protect the intellectual property and creative genius of America’s incredible musicians, ” said President Trump on Thursday.
“Streaming has made music more accessible than ever, yet our laws have not kept up with the pace of technology. As such, artists of all varieties and all career stages are losing out on revenue that they have rightly earned,” he said.
Like other celebrities who attended the signing, country singer John Rich praised the president and the bipartisan support it attained in the Senate.
“We always talk about music as the universal language, you wondered if that was still going to be the case in Washington D.C., where there is no universal language. We look up and see how hard people fought for this. In our state of Tennessee, Marsha Blackburn for years and years has been working on this,” Rich said. “To see President Trump finally sign this and it go into effect is so huge. It affects literally every songwriter.”
“Some would say the downside to this legislation is people in the industry who didn’t have to pay will now have to pay,” said Rep. Darrell Issa, a California Republican, alluding to streaming services like Spotify SPOT, +1.87% and Apple Music.
Although Kanye West met with the president on Thursday, the rapper did not attend the bill signing.
