The US had some form of Laissez faire from the founding of the Republic until just before WWI. The Federal government spent 3% of GDP and state and local spending was under 10% of GDP. This corresponded to a time of major economic growth. Today Federal spending alone is about 25% of GDP. Throw in many needless regulations that impede upon wealth creation. This 25% number will grow because with greater life expectancies and lower birth rates and of course the ratio of Medicare and Social Security recipients to those of the working population paying taxes is constantly increasing. Basically, this HUGE country has become a welfare state to a certain degree and you can't expect Laissez faire or any type of real libertarian program to succeed as a large percentage of the population depends on big government and for people like us to fund it.
Sadly this big government did indeed mess up BIGTIME with cannabis and as we watch TLRY, CGC. ACBFF, HYYDF, CRON and others FLY and bring in major revenues to Canada we sit on a national debt level of $21.4 TRILLION.
Rant over. Sorry, I hear Laissez faire and I get a little too excited!
