"I flew these beauties for 17 years for the RAF as a Flight Engineer and have just finished as their flight simulator instructor, as they are being retired from the RAF at the end of March 2014. The phrase "they don't make them like this anymore" has never been more apt than when applied to the TriStar. A truly fantastic aircraft and I speak on behalf of all that have flown her; She'll be sadly missed. :
"Beautiful plane. Far superior to the shoddily designed DC-10/MD-11."
"Doesn't the wing design seem strangely modern? The taper and especially the extended wingtips remind me of the 787."
"Back when I was traveling a lot I flew on this plane all the time. It was the greatest aircraft ever built as far as I am concerned. We used to say: "What turbulence?" For some reason the safety you felt with the sounds of those Rolls Royce engines was incredible, not to mention the structural integrity of the aircraft itself. It is truly missed by those of us who have flown on them as often as we did."
"On approach, The Tristar did not 'porpoise' at all due to the dynamic lift capabilities of the flying tail. Her nose always stayed up and in the same relative position to the horizon. She always settled into a very nice landing. I don't think I ever did a hard landing, even in heavy crosswinds. She'd always just settled on with very little help. Wonderful to fly and handled like a fighter, even low and slow. A 'Go Around' lever on the throttle stand re-configured the aircraft immediately so that you did not descend more than 6 feet before you started to climb out again with engines automatically throttled up to takeoff settings, same with the flaps. I heard once that if you tried a go around with a DC-10 below 600 feet, you were going to land anyway, so don't bother."
"She's the most beautiful commercial aircraft ever designed no matter what livery she was decked out in, though the classic 70's Delta version will always bring on goose bumps for me!
"Solidly built and one of the safest jetliners to ever fly. I had the privilege of being aboard her close to a dozen times. She was roomy and very comfortable with a lot of headroom. She also had the most distinct sound of any plane, love those triple Rolls Royce beauties. I miss flying on them and in seeing them in the sky. She'll always be my favourite!"
