WASHINGTON - The current farm bill, which funds agriculture and some food programs, will expire on Sunday.
Missouri Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler says Congress will not have a bill ready to replace it.
“It looks like we will probably have to wait until after the election in order to get the senators, especially the Democrats, to come to the table,” Rep. Hartzler says.
Hartzler says Democrats and Republicans are still at odds on key issues, like work requirements for food stamp recipients.
She says farmers should not expect a new farm bill until December. Most of the programs in the farm bill, like crop insurance and snap, will continue beyond Sunday's expiration.
But in January, dairy farmers will feel the heat, when the margin protection program that keeps many of them in business expires..
Members of the Senate House and Agriculture Committee released a statement today saying progress is happening and they are committed to getting the farm bill right.
