Google CEO to meet GOP lawmakers behind closed doo

"Google CEO Sundar Pichai will head to Washington D.C. on Friday to meet with a group of Republican lawmakers behind closed doors — the latest step in the company’s ongoing effort to avoid European Union-style regulations on its business practices, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Pichai is also expected to testify to the House Judiciary Committee after the midterm election in November.
For months, Republican lawmakers have hammered Silicon Valley’s largest companies over perceived anti-conservative bias. Lawmakers have additionally criticized Google for its market dominance, anticompetitive behavior, lax privacy protections and reports that the company is building a censored version of its search engine in an attempt to re-enter China.
On Monday, the Alphabet Inc.-owned company published a set of privacy guidelines it follows to help lawmakers as they think about potentially drafting new legislation affecting online platforms.
“Now, more than any other time I have worked in this field, there is real momentum to develop baseline rules of the road for data protection,” Google’s new chief privacy officer Keith Enright wrote in a blog post. “Google welcomes this and supports comprehensive, baseline privacy regulation. People deserve to feel comfortable that all entities that use personal information will be held accountable for protecting it. And we believe that regulation can support a dynamic marketplace for businesses of all types and sizes.”

Egress Software Brings AI-Powered Data Security to the North American Market
"BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Egress Software Technologies, a data security company that helps enterprises protect unstructured data to meet compliance requirements and drive business productivity, today announced that it had expanded into the North American market. The company has selected Boston as the location of its US headquarters because of the city’s thriving tech ecosystem and access to talent.
“Egress’ revenue growth of 500 percent over the past four years has been underpinned by the excellence and innovation of our technology as we help European customers mitigate the considerable compliance and data security risks associated with sharing highly sensitive data,” Egress CEO Tony Pepper said. “The US faces a similar situation as states, led by California, Colorado and New York, are increasingly enacting data privacy and security regulations that will have a major impact on business operations in the coming years. We have proven expertise in helping enterprises navigate an increasingly complicated regulatory environment with an intelligent data security platform that secures unstructured data through a user-centric approach.”
While state-sponsored attacks and ultra-sophisticated hackers have captivated the media’s attention, a far more pervasive threat —at the root of most data breaches – is human error. According to the Global Breach Level Index, 76 percent of data records breached in 2017 were the direct result of human error rather than a deliberate cyber incident.
Egress has experienced significant growth in 2018, increasing new SaaS subscriptions by 64 percent in the first half of the year alone, with a 93 percent renewal rate—demonstrating the loyalty of the company’s customer base, and the strength and trust in its user-centric platform. This growth is fueled in part by the platforms’ ability to fulfill many GDPR compliance requirements for European businesses. In North America, the company is already gaining traction, attracting new customers including financial services, manufacturing and high-tech firms, state and local government agencies, and healthcare networks."
