Lightwave Logic reports progress on 50-Gbps polymer modulator, eyes 100 Gbps

August 30, 2018

Author Stephen Hardy [Editorial Director and Associate Publisher]

Lightwave Logic, Inc. (OTCQB: LWLG), which is developing optical components based on organic polymers, says that its plans to commercialize a 50-Gbps polymer-based modulator are on track. The company adds that it now has its eyes on developing 100-Gbps capabilities.

The company says it has built and equipped an on-site fabrication facility that has produced what it called “several” wafer lots. Lightwave Logic also plans to expand the test and design capabilities within its Englewood, CO, headquarters to address 100-Gbps requirements. However, the company says that designs at these higher speeds demand new test capabilities that will require partnerships with test instrument suppliers. Lightwave Logic also has begun to expand its internal expertise in this area through new hires.

Lightwave Logic recently grew its materials, device design, fabrication, testing, reliability, and quality assurance resources through the June 15 acquisition of fellow polymer technology company BrPhotonics, a joint venture formed by GigOptix (which changed its name to GigPeak before being acquired by IDT in 2017) and Brazil’s CPqD (see “GigOptix says silicon photonics order imminent for joint venture”). The $350,000 deal brought 15 polymer chemistry materials, devices, packaging, and subsystems patents.

“The process to digest the acquisition is going very smoothly, and we plan to integrate the acquired technology into our P2IC [polymer photonic integrated circuit] platform,” commented Dr. Michael Lebby, who joined Lightwave Logic as CEO in 2017.

Lightwave Logic has worked in the area of polymers for several years (see, for example, “Lightwave Logic launches material platform”). It brought Lebby onboard to help transform that work into commercial products. Dr. Karen Liu, former analyst at RHK and Ovum and most recently a sales and marketing executive with Kaiam, joined the company in July as vice president of sales and marketing in anticipation of the product roll out.
