During the dot.com days, investors responded to daring business practices with money, and lots of it. The American stock market rose dramatically during that period, with hundreds of companies being founded weekly, especially in tech hot spots like the Silicon Valley near San Francisco. People became rich beyond all their dreams. Many people associate lavish lifestyles with the dot.com bubble, because companies regularly sponsored exclusive events filled with fine food and outrageous entertainment. At conferences and events the tech industry typically included entertainment and sometimes the costs of these events were counted in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Now there was a down side as well. After all, the market did crash once all was said and done. But the up side was something only dreams are made of --- only it was in fact real. The fortunes earned during that period are still with us today. This is the miracle of a capitalist economy. No other economic system on earth has ever pulled so many out of poverty, and no other system has ever benefited so many.
