Why does a stable QDLED matter ?

First came LEDs, then OLEDs, now Quantum Dot (QD) LED hybrids could make installing and switching completely to LED lighting systems easier and more cost-effective than ever. One of the main issues with LEDs is that because they are made from organic material they can be extremely costly to produce. As a result for consumers looking to switch to LEDs the cost of LED bulbs and lighting systems can be prohibitive.

The introduction of Quantum dots into LED design marks a critical step forward in reducing the cost of LED production and making them more affordable for the average consumer. Quantum dots are tiny nanocrystals that emit light when “excited”. Quantum Dot LEDs (or QLEDS) are made of a plastic solution on top of an indium-tin-oxide (ITO) that was originally used as an anode for the LED. The actual process of assembling the QLED carried out at room temperature instead of a strictly climate controlled environment. This is another contributing factor to the QLEDs increased cost effectiveness.

Cost effectiveness isn’t the only benefit of the QLED. It is also able to conduct color very well and in new QLED TVs they replace the red, green, and blue subpixels. In addition to improved color reproduction, QLEDs are also energy efficient and cost much less to manufacture. QLEDs can also be made to be very thin, transparent and flexible. These properties mean QLEDs are easy to integrate into wearable products designs.

QLEDS are also making major changes to manufacturing, measurement and monitoring tools. Many manufacturers are using QLED displays because of their exceptional backlighting capabilities and their high quality color rendering. The possibility for applications for QLEDs are growing each day but some of the most notable uses so far have been to make improvements to optical laser components, solar cells, light detectors, and image sensors.

For people in industries that require them to measure light, color or use lasers for manufacturing or testing purposes the explosion of interest and development in QLEDs has been great news. Electronics and display manufacturers, lighting specialists, even medical and imaging equipment industries stand to benefit from QLEDs. Not only will QLEDs help them test and create a better product it will even ample energy sipping lighting to their own manufacturing spaces for a fraction of the cost.

Most average consumers have anxiously been waiting for the price to drop on LED bulbs. Soon they will be able to buy them at a much reduced price AND get better quality color and lighting in addition to other benefits of LEDs (i.e. their longevity and energy saving abilities). For years we’ve been talking about finding that next big innovation to make LED lights more affordable and it looks like with QLEDs we have finally turned that corner
