TORONTO, Aug. 14, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Starting August 24, Cinesphere at Ontario Place will host special anniversary screenings of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and The Dark Knight (2008) in IMAX® 70MM film. For a limited time, cinephiles can celebrate the 50 th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s science fiction masterpiece and the 10 th anniversary of Christopher Nolan’s dark take on a superhero film in all their visual splendor.

Cinesphere is one of four selected IMAX theatres in North America chosen to screen the IMAX 70MM film versions of 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Dark Knight for a limited time, giving moviegoers the opportunity to see the groundbreaking films on the largest possible screen, creating a truly immersive experience.

Widely considered one of the greatest films of the 20th century, 2001: A Space Odyssey was originally released on April 4, 1968, igniting the imaginations of both critics and audiences. With the film, Kubrick redefined the limits of moviemaking and cemented his legacy as one of the most revolutionary and influential motion picture directors of all time. This is the first time it will be screened in IMAX 70MM film.

With The Dark Knight , Nolan pioneered the use of IMAX cameras in a major feature film, marking a revolutionary integration of two film formats. With an iconic opening scene and acting performances hailed by the critics, seeing The Dark Knight in this format is a rare opportunity for viewers.

2001: A Space Odyssey will screen:  Daily from Friday, August 24 to Thursday, September 6 at 10:15 p.m. Twice daily from Friday, August 31 to Thursday, September 6 at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The Dark Knight will screen:  Daily from Friday, August 24 to Thursday, August 30 at 6:30 p.m.  These special anniversary screenings are another part of Ontario Place’s expanded offerings and activities this summer at Toronto’s waterfront including the free Music in Trillium Park series, the opening of the Vista Eatery (LLBO), free yoga classes, boat rentals and a a variety of previously announced recreational activities.
